River Flax Cottage derives its name from the land on which it now stands. The land was purchased in 1902 to establish a mill to process native flax growing in nearby creeks and rivers. Production has long since changed from hemp to farming, but later generations of the same family still earn their livelihood from that land. The cottage itself began life as two army barracks situated on Urapukapuka Island in the middle of the Bay of Islands. From there it was transported - by barge - to a site in Kerikeri, not far from the historic Stone Store and Kemp House. An English boat builder connected the barracks and lovingly converted them to a home for his family. It was he who introduced the wooden paneling that now gives the cottage its feeling of warmth. In 2002 it was shifted again - this time on the back of a truck - to its current resting place not far from the original flax mill. River Flax Cottage is now the perfect rural hideaway, near Paihia, Waitangi, Kerikeri, Russell and Kawakawa, 60 minutes from the Hokianga and 90 minutes from Kaitaia. The cottage is surrounded by trees and situated in the middle of a working beef farm.Whilst semi-attached to the farm house,it is private with a separate entrance and a rural outlook. French doors open onto a north-facing deck overlooking fields and bush-clad hills beyond. The bedroom is light and spacious, and wood paneling throughout enhances the cottage`s relaxed character. The wood also features in the kitchen/dining/living area and recently renovated bathroom. Laundry facilities are available.
